Brief
Artwork for outer boundary wall of Tihar Jail, largest complex of prisons in South Asia. The Project was part of St+art Delhi: A Street Art Festival that aims to promote art in public space and provides a collaborative platform for artists from all over the world. DG of Tihar Jail briefed us to paint the entire wall and make it ready for the inauguration by Governor of Delhi in 3 weeks.
Location & Scale
Public facing part of the Tihar Jail wall is around 960 meters long and 3 meters high. Project was completed with the involvement of 10 local sign painters and 5 sign painters from Uttar Pradesh along with 15 young street artists from India and abroad. Entire wall is the longest mural in India today.
Solution & Unique Features
We decided to engage the audience with large-scale hand painted type mixed with artworks by various artists. We selected a poem written by one of the female inmate from the Jail. ‘Chardiwari’ is about how one feels inside four walls, which managed to get the inside voice of prison to the outside world. One can read the almost 1km long poem while passing by the road.
