Brief During the Ganesha festival millions of idols are immersed in the sea. The toxins in the paint, like Plaster of Paris, Zinc, Mercury and Lead, used in the making of the idols pollute the water and kill the fish. To generate awareness for the harm we put the ocean through, we had to find a solution that kept the tradition alive and also made it beneficial for the environment.
Solution
Immersing Ganesha idols on immersion day is a 100-year old tradition. To break it would be blasphemous. Every year, SPROUTS Environment Trust conducts massive beach clean up drives. We needed an idea that would stop people from polluting the ocean, in the first place? So that we didn’t have to clean it up. And idols made from fish food was a natural fit and created enough buzz and awareness.
